Sanitary Mixing Application Guide

hero title image

Sanitary mixing equipment and aseptic mixers demand strict compliance with industry standards, including FDA, 3A, USP-VI, or BPE specifications.  Common applications for stainless steel sanitary mixers include food, beverage, or dairy processing, as well as processes that require brewing equipment.  Fusion is proud to offer you both standard and custom sanitary mixing options to meet your process requirements.

Some common sanitary mixing processes include, but are not limited to:

  • Beverage
  • Food Applications
  • Brewing
  • Dairy
  • Fermenters
  • Biotech and Pharmaceutical (See our Ultra-Sanitary Mixing application guide)

We will work with you to offer a sanitary mixer that meets your requirements for aseptic mixing. Consider these three important questions for sanitary mixing applications:

  1. Does the shaft and impeller need to have a sanitary finish? There are different grades. Most food and beverage applications require a 32Ra finish (one grade of a #4 finish). See our Knowledge Center for more info on Surface Treatments.
  2. Do the welds on all of the wetted parts need to be ground smooth? Grinding and polishing welds is often required for tanks with CIP (clean in place) systems, but it is not always required for open tank systems. Ask your local health inspector for details.
  3. Does the mixer drive have to be paint-free or coated with a special paint? Fusion's Pro Series Mixers and Pro Stainless Series Mixers have paint-free, stainless steel clamps and mounting plates STANDARD - even on our painted drive units! Stainless Steel is standard on the fasteners also. We have a large selection of ALL STAINLESS mixer drives available as special USDA approved coatings. Whether you need special coatings or an all stainless sanitary mixer drive, we will accomodate your requests.

We look forward to discussing your project! To save you time during your call, here are a few pieces of information we will need to know about your sanitary mixing application so we can properly size your mixer:

  • What are the dimensions of the tank or kettle?
  • What are the characteristics of the fluid you are mixing? Viscosity and density info is preferred, even if it is a comparison to a similar fluid (i.e. honey, ketchup, vegetable oil, etc.)
  • What special sanitary features do you need for the mixer? Does it have to have an all stainless mixer drive?
  • How quickly does the mixing process need to occur? For heated kettles, does a scraper or anchor impeller need to be used for FAST heat transfer?
  • What is the available power source for electrical equipment?
  • How would you like to mount the mixer to the tank? Small mixers can be clamped or bolted. On large mixers, special care needs to be taken to make sanitation, cleaning, and maintenance an easy process.

Fusion understands that there is a vast difference between sanitary mixing for food & beverage and sanitary pharmaceutical mixing. The requirements for each industry are drastically different, yet many of our competitors treat these applications similarly. Contact us for additional information; we're happy to discuss your project and provide you with the correct mixing equipment.
